SYNOPSIS
The film is inspired by the contemporary life of the indigenous people inhabiting the European arctic region, the Sámi, widely and wrongly known as Lapp.
After fifteen years of researching and photographing the European arctic and its indigenous inhabitants, the Greek film director Dimitra Zirou, begins to film a documentary inspired by this distant land and its people.
Two parallel stories, are gradually unfolding the everyday life of two very different persons: 86 year-old Sara, and Mihka, a 7 year-old Sámi boy, both living in Guovdageaidnu – Kautokeino, a remote small town in the middle of the Norwegian arctic tundra.
The film is observing their life during an one-year’s cycle, through the changing of the arctic seasons as they shift from the long winter’s darkness to the summer’s never-setting light.

Anna Stereopoulou composed the music for ‘Into the Land of Ice and Fire’ documentary film, between March and May 2021, whilst she first started by researching on the History and the Traditions / Music of Sámi people. She was also inspired by her discussions with film director, Dimitra Zirou on her various experiences from her long-term stays in the region before and during the shooting of the film. Additionally, she was guided by Dimitra’s Sámi music recommendations (temp tracks) such as, poet, musician, painter Nils-Aslak Valkeapää and music composer and singer Mari Boine, by the music of Niilas and Kajsa Balto participant artists, as well as by some of Anna’s own music influences, such as Terje Isungset and Wardruna.
The Music is an Analogue & Acoustic Ritual, aiming to a general Unity of the Elements of Nature, and Spectrum Harmonization (grounding). In that way, it creates a Bonding between Earth (ground – plants) and Sky (sun – moon – northern lights), with a focus on the Light, expressing “a great joy that the sun rises from the darkness… and it becomes brighter and brighter!“* and full of Hope. | (*Sara’s words, during the film)
Also, it is based on the strong element of Time and Geography of the Sámi, as they are highlighted through the Photography (time-lapse and drones), the Field Recordings (synchronous sound), and the Stories narrated by the two protagonists.
The (music) Structure was designed according to the Script and the Contrasts indicated by the title itself, namely, Ice & Fire, and consequently, Stillness (eg. arctic tundra) & Motion (eg. northern lights), Past & Future.
Musical themes (melodies – rhythms) and Psycho-acoustic timbres flow in parallel to the Seasons’ Transitions, the Old (primordial) and Modern (ecclesiastical) Ceremonies, the dazzling white, but also vividly colourful and resounding Nature (running or frozen Water, Birds, Reindeer, as a parallel to the Shamanistic imitation of animal sounds), as well as details, such as the decorative metal features (percussion) of the Traditional Costumes, as an Ethnographic / Ethnomusicological element.

As for the selection of the musical Instruments and Sounds, it was done with respect to the Cosmology of the Sámi and to the love of the Shamans for Nature (Invocations of Events & Healing). Special emphasis was given to their unique musical instruments, the sound of which, is approached by the Acoustic and Electronic instruments that accompany the image and unite with the Voice: Dialogues / Narratives, Joik/Yoik traditional Sámi vocal songs, modern Psalms and Poetry.
More specifically,
• the Bendir and Arbani, represent the dominant Sámi Drum (made of reindeer skin)
• the (Irish) Tin Whistle recorder represents the Fádno (type of reed-pipe made of ‘Angelica archangelica’ -wild celery- stalks)
• the Vibraphone (electric piano) represents the Marimba and other musical instruments made of stone or ice
• the Shell represents the Bukkehorn (horns of goat)
• the (Organic) Shakers, express Earthbound frequencies (Lower Chakra, Soil / Seeds)
• the Bells, (Mineral & Metallic) Wind Chimes and Synthesizers, express more delicate frequencies (Higher Chakra, Northern Lights, Planets / Celestial bodies)
RECORDING
The recordings of the music were made by Anna Stereopoulou (AEAEA Studio), giving her the opportunity to expand her knowledge, both in the Performance, Recording, Editing and Mixing of (Acoustic) Percussion, as well as in the (musical) Rituals of Sámi / Shamans, as a (sonic) healing and cleansing Experience.
In overall, it has offered a useful part in Anna’s Art & Science Research, and has also inspired further works of her’s (such as ‘The Anti-Post-Primitives’ sound composition and installation, 2021-2022).

ΣΥΝΟΨΗ
Η ταινία είναι εμπνευσμένη από την σύγχρονη ζωή των αυτοχθόνων που κατοικούν στην Ευρωπαϊκή αρκτική ζώνη, τους Sámi, ευρέως και λανθασμένως γνωστoί ως Λάπωνες.
Μετά από δεκαπέντε χρόνια έρευνας και φωτογράφησης του Ευρωπαïκού αρκτικού τοπίου και των αυτοχθόνων κατοίκων του, η σκηνοθέτις Δήμητρα Ζήρου ξεκινά ένα ντοκυμαντέρ εμπνευσμένο από την μακρινή αυτή γη και τους ανθρώπους της.
Δύο παράλληλες ιστορίες ξετυλίγουν σταδιακά την καθημερινή ζωή δύο πολύ διαφορετικών ανθρώπων: της 86χρονης Sara, και του 7χρονου Mihka, που ζουν στην Guovdageaidnu – Kautokeino, μια μικρή απομακρυσμένη πόλη στην μέση της Νορβηγικής αρκτικής τούνδρας.
Η ταινία παρατηρεί την ζωή τους κατά την διάρκεια ενός έτους, μέσα από τις εναλλαγές των εποχών και το πέρασμα από το διαρκές καλοκαιρινό φως, στο αρκτικό σκοτάδι.

Η Άννα Στερεοπούλου συνέθεσε την μουσική για το ντοκυμαντέρ «Into the Land of Ice and Fire» μεταξύ Μαρτίου-Μαΐου 2021, ξεκινώντας με μια έρευνα τόσο για την Ιστορία, όσο και για τις Παραδόσεις / Μουσική των Σάμι. Επίσης, εμπνεύστηκε από τις συζητήσεις της με την σκηνοθέτιδα Δήμητρα Ζήρου σχετικά με τις εμπειρίες της από τις μακροχρόνιες διαμονές της στην περιοχή, πριν και κατά την διάρκεια των γυρισμάτων της ταινίας. Επιπλέον, καθοδηγήθηκε από τις μουσικές προτάσεις (temp tracks) της Δήμητρας, όπως ο ποιητής, μουσικός, ζωγράφος Nils-Aslak Valkeapää και η μουσικοσυνθέτις και τραγουδίστρια Mari Boine, από την μουσική των συμμετεχόντων καλλιτεχνών, Niilas και Kajsa Balto, αλλά και μουσικές επιρροές της ίδιας της Άννας, όπως ο Terje Isungset και οι Wardruna.
Η Μουσική αποτελεί μια Αναλογική και Ακουστική Τελετουργία, που στοχεύει σε μια γενικότερη Ένωση των Στοιχείων της Φύσης, και Συχνοτική Εναρμόνιση (γείωση). Έτσι, δημιουργεί έναν Δεσμό Γης (έδαφος – φυτά) και Ουρανού (ήλιος – σελήνη – βόρειο σέλας), εστιάζοντας στο Φως που αναδύεται από το σκοτάδι, όλο και πιο δυνατό και ελπιδοφόρο.
Επίσης, βασίζεται στο έντονο στοιχείο του Χρόνου και του Τόπου των Σάμι, όπως αναδεικνύονται μέσα από την Φωτογραφία (time-lapse και drones), τα Field Recordings (σύγχρονος καταγεγραμμένος ήχος ταινίας), και τις Αφηγήσεις των δύο πρωταγωνιστών.
Η (μουσική) Δομή σχεδιάστηκε σύμφωνα, τόσο με το ίδιο το σενάριο, όσο και με τις Αντιθέσεις που επισημαίνει ο ίδιος ο τίτλος, δηλαδή, Πάγος & Φωτιά, και κατ’ επέκταση, Στασιμότητα (π.χ. αρκτική τούνδρα) & Κίνηση (π.χ. βόρειο σέλας), Παρελθόν & Μέλλον.
Μουσικά θέματα (μελωδίες – ρυθμοί) και Ψυχο-ακουστικά ηχοχρώματα ρέουν παράλληλα με τις Εναλλαγές των Εποχών, τις Παλαιές (αρχέγονες) και Σύγχρονες (εκκλησιαστικές) Τελετές, την εκτυφλωτικά λευκή, αλλά και ζωηρά πολύχρωμη και ηχηρή Φύση (τρεχούμενα ή παγωμένα Νερά, Αέρας, Πουλιά, Τάρανδοι, ως παραλληλισμός των Σαμανιστικών «Απομιμητικών ήχων»), καθώς και λεπτομέρειες, όπως τα διακοσμητικά (κρουστά) αντικείμενα των Παραδοσιακών Ενδυμασιών, ως Εθνογραφικό / Εθνομουσικολογικό στοιχείο.

Όσο για την επιλογή των μουσικών οργάνων και ήχων, έγινε με σεβασμό στην Κοσμολογία των Σάμι και γενικότερα, στην αγάπη των Σαμάνων προς την Φύση (Επικλήσεις Φαινομένων & Ίασης). Ωστόσο, ξεχωριστή έμφαση δόθηκε στα μοναδικά μουσικά τους όργανα, ο ήχος των οποίων, προσεγγίζεται από τα Φυσικά και Ηλεκτρονικά όργανα που ντύνουν την εικόνα και ενώνονται με την Φωνή: Διάλογοι/Αφηγήσεις, Joik (Yoik: Γιόϊκ, τοπικά παραδοσιακά φωνητικά τραγούδια των Σάμι), σύγχρονοι Ψαλμοί και Ποίηση.
Πιο συγκεκριμένα,
• το Bendir και το Arbani, αναπαριστούν το κυρίαρχο Τύμπανο των Σάμι (από δέρμα ταράνδου)
• η (ιρλανδική) φλογέρα Tin Whistle αναπαριστά το Fádno (τύπος -καλαμένιας- φλογέρας από μίσχους του βοτάνου «Αγγελική αρχαγγελική»)
• το Βιμπράφωνο (ηλεκτρικό πιάνο) αναπαριστά την Μαρίμπα και άλλα μουσικά όργανα από πέτρα ή πάγο
• το Κοχύλι αναπαριστά το Bukkehorn (κέρας τράγου)
• τα (Οργανικά) Σείστρα, εκφράζουν Γήϊνες συχνότητες (Χαμηλότερα Τσάκρα, Χώμα / Καρποί)
• τα Καμπανάκια, (Ορυκτά & Μεταλλικά) Σείστρα – Κουρτίνες, και Synthesizer εκφράζουν πιο λεπτοφυείς συχνότητες (Υψηλότερα Τσάκρα, Βόρειο Σέλας, Πλανήτες / Ουράνια σώματα)
ΗΧΟΓΡΑΦΗΣΗ
Τέλος, οι Ηχογραφήσεις της μουσικής πραγματοποιήθηκαν από την ίδια την Άννα Στερεοπούλου (AEAEA Studio), δίνοντάς της την ευκαιρία να επεκτείνει τις γνώσεις της, τόσο στην Ερμηνεία, Καταγραφή, Επεξεργασία και Μίξη Φυσικών Κρουστών μουσικών οργάνων, όσο και στις (μουσικές) Τελετουργίες των Σάμι / Σαμάνων, ως μια (ηχητική) θεραπευτική και εξαγνιστική Βιωματική Εμπειρία.
Γενικότερα, η συγκεκριμένη εργασία, προσέφερε ένα χρήσιμο τμήμα στην Καλλιτεχνική & Επιστιμονική Έρευνα της Άννας, και την ενέπνευσε για την δημιουργία επόμενων έργων της (όπως η ηχητική σύνθεση και εγκατάσταση ‘The Anti-Post-Primitives’, 2021-2022).
