The music piece «Galanthus» was composed, mixed and mastered by Anna Stereopoulou (April-May 2014), for the MAARBLE «SOUNDS OF SPACE» Musical Composition Contest (2014). The composition consists of various space sounds, “compiled through the Canadian Array for Realtime Investigations of Magnetic Activity (CARISMA) data”, offered to all participants. The audio files (in .wav format) are taken from the two available categories (20Hz & 100Hz) and used both “in their original form and in various technically modified forms”, such as Modulation, Process (Reverse, Stereo Flip, Pitch Shift, etc.), EQ, various Filters and Effects (Delay, Reverb, etc.). Towards the final section of the piece [07:18 – 07:55 /(08:07)] we listen to the only sound performed and produced by the composer, when the melody -previously created by space sounds- is now performed on Piano, in a retrograde transformation. Galanthus plant is said to have been an antidote against Circe’s poisonous drugs (Greek mythology). Mother -planet- Earth; i.e. Nature is the greatest teacher and healer, through close observation and listening of its functions and miracles found within its microcosm and macrocosm, we are invited to Learn. In brief, the composition starts with a Low-Frequency repetitive beat, followed by an introductory ‘unlocking’ step and two sections of Binaural Beats. The White Sound parts included, guide us to the Melodic Blossom part, triggering the Human (Piano) inspiration to create, imitating Nature and thus, re-offering more inspiration to the Cosmos. The piece ends with the same repetitive beat as in the beginning, this time transposed an octave higher. «Galanthus» showcases Anna Stereopoulou’s wish that more Melodic elements are needed to be performed nowadays and in Higher Frequencies.

“Planet Earth is a natural source of radio waves, which surround us all the time. Although most of these waves are in the acoustic frequency range, they are not audible by humans. They are electromagnetic waves – not acoustic ones; we would have ‘heard’ them if we had radio antennas instead of ears. Radio waves can be detected by our ears if we convert them to sound waves, by using a very low frequency (VLF) receiver. A VLF receiver consists of an antenna and a radio amplifier, and it is sensitive to radio waves. After converting electromagnetic (radio) waves into acoustic (sound) waves, with the same frequency, the sounds produced by our planet can be ‘heard’. These sounds correspond to several types of radio emissions propagating in the Earth’s atmosphere, ionosphere and magnetosphere. The way these waves sound, when played through an audio system, defines their name: sferics, tweeks, whistlers, chorus, and hiss. We also call them ‘Earth Songs’.
The MAARBLE contest ‘Sounds of Space’ musical composition combines scientific and artistic ways of thinking, through the science of Astronomy and the art of Music. It is an original idea to provide scientific information to the public, inviting people to ‘feel’ the science and to think about art. Composers are invited to take part at the MAARBLE musical contest. The idea is to use the natural sounds of the Earth’s magnetosphere in order to compose electroacoustic music. Each composition must be of maximum duration 10 min.”

As found in the analysis of the « c i r c e :the black cut: » project [launch: May 31st, 2014 – read more here] “2014; the transition towards a new state requiring a passage through darkness, where we are called to see with ‘different’ eyes and distinguish our voice, out of the chaotic urban noisy fields; a redefinition of our era’s cutting edge; a rediscovery of our senses. (…) Sound is Ariadne’s helping thread; it is the map of (Mother) Earth, revealing the structure and function of our society.”
Apparently and gratefully, that thought was confirmed and shared through friends who listened to the «Galanthus» piece and accepted to send any Images and Feelings created within them. It is worth mentioning that they all listened to the piece before any of the above information was published; i.e. without knowing what the piece is about. “Galanthus; the intensity of the philosophical stone. A trip in space, in the universe of our consciousness. Space; alone in space. Life; fire of life; robotic life; futuristic robots. Ambivalence between Present and Past. Vessel spatial derivant, floating out of time. Galanthus seems to be a spaceship progressubg out of time. Anguish. Unable to do anything. Infra-basses are closing you into the spaceship. Feeling closed, like a prisonner in space.
The sound, due to its Tears, creates a liberation. Thanks to the sound, it seems like a Light in this obscurity of infra-basses. So intense and deep.
Galanthus is the second version of “2001: A Space Odyssey”. Now there is water; water and wind and music borns after the sound.
The Piano… intriguing… (a bit like the notes in the film “Eyes Wide Shut”). What a voyage. An incredible loop. This music has the violent perfume also found in Stanley Kubrick’s films. This music tells about the Human in the Universe. Galanthus asks a philosophical question about consciousness of life…” [Eve-Lys / France]
«Galanthus (Γάλανθος); η ένταση της φιλοσοφικής λίθου. Ένα ταξίδι στο διάστημα, στο σύμπαν της συνείδησής μας. Διάστημα· μόνος στο διάστημα. Ζωή· φωτιά ζωής· ρομποτική ζωή· φουτουριστικά ρομπότ. Αμφιθυμία μεταξύ Παρελθόντος και Παρόντος.
Η χωρική απόρροια ενός θαλάσσιου σκάφους που πλέει εκτός χρόνου. Αγωνία. Ανίκανος να κάνεις οτιδήποτε. Υπόηχοι σε κλείνουν εντός ενός διαστημόπλοιου. Αίσθηση εγκλεισμού, όπως ενός φυλακισμένου στο διάστημα.
Ο Ήχος, εξαιτίας των Δακρύων του, δημιουργεί απελευθέρωση. Εξαιτίας του ήχου, φαίνεται να υπάρχει κάποιο Φως μέσα σε αυτή την Αφάνεια, στο Σκοτάδι των υπόηχων. Τόσο έντονο και βαθύ.
Ο “Γάλανθος” είναι μια δεύτερη εκδοχή της ταινίας “2001: Η Οδύσσεια του Διαστήματος”. Τώρα υπάρχει νερό· νερό και αέρας και μουσική γεννιούνται μετά τον Ήχο.
Το Πιάνο… ενδιαφέρον… (παρόμοιο των νοτών του film Μάτια Ερμητικά Κλειστά). Τί ταξίδι. Μια απίστευτη λούπα. Η μουσική αυτή έχει το βίαιο άρωμα που συναντά κανείς στις ταινίες του Stanley Kubrick. Η μουσική αυτή μιλάει για τον Άνθρωπο και το Σύμπαν. Ο “Γάλανθος” θέτει ένα φιλοσοφικό ερώτημα για την επίγνωση σχετικά με τη ζωή…» [Eve-Lys / Γαλλία]

“A strange feeling. Neither the word «fear» or «awe» could describe it well. I also shuddered in some points.
It makes you want to search and discover what is happening. Where are all these sounds coming from? It is impossible not to create some images. I felt it is a part of a film or part of a group of images and that I am just listening to their sound, without being able to see them. Or like sounds of a dream. Many images were created within me which were transformed in one, in the end. Specifically, in a space.
A dystopian set in shades of grey.
Sea, clouds, drizzle; following the piece’s volume each time it gets louder;
desert; abandoned, partly ruined buildings and hills made of junk. Something like a sci-fi movie, in which a man is left alone on earth, whilst the whole humankind is vanished.
The only person survived, we cannot see, though its eyes work as a camera, perusing the space. We listen to the sound of its feet dragging within the junk and the sand. We somehow feel its agony looking for some life form within silence. Gunshots are heard from far away, at some point. The landscape is blurred and it seems like two landscapes become one, like two reflections in a car window, when joined. Everything goes blurry. Did they really exist? Was it just a dream? Was he / she /it sucked within /by dystopia?

«Μου προκάλεσε ένα περίεργο συναίσθημα. Ούτε η λέξη “φόβος” ούτε η λέξη “δέος” μπορούν να το περιγράψουν σωστά. Ανατρίχιασα σε κάποια σημεία.
Σε κάνει να ψάξεις να βρεις τι συμβαίνει. Από πού ακούγονται αυτοί οι ήχοι. Δεν γίνεται να μην
σου δημιουργηθούν εικόνες. Ένιωσα πως είναι μέρος ενός φιλμ ή ενός συνόλου εικόνων και απλά ακούω τον ήχο τους χωρίς να μπορώ να τις δω. Ή σαν ήχοι ενός ονείρου. Μου δημιουργήθηκαν ήρθαν πολλές εικόνες που στο τέλος μετασχηματίστηκαν σε μία, για την ακρίβεια σε έναν χώρο.
Ένα δυστοπικό σκηνικό, σε αποχρώσεις γκρίζου.
Θάλασσα, σύννεφα, ψιλόβροχο που σε σημεία που το κομμάτι δυναμώνει, δυναμώνει κι αυτό· ερημιά, εγκαταλελειμμένα, μισοκατεστραμμένα κτήρια και λόφοι από σκουπίδια. Κάτι σαν ταινία επιστημονικής φαντασίας που ένας άνθρωπος έχει μείνει στη γη, ενώ όλο το ανθρώπινο είδος έχει εξαφανιστεί.
Το μοναδικό άτομο που έχει μείνει, εμείς δε μπορούμε να το δούμε, αλλά τα μάτια του λειτουργούν σαν κάμερα και περιεργάζονται τον χώρο. Ακούμε το σύρσιμο των ποδιών του στα σκουπίδια και στην άμμο. Νιώθουμε με ένα τρόπο την αγωνία του να αναζητήσει μια μορφή ζωής μέσα στη σιωπή. Κάποια στιγμή ακούγονται από μακριά πυροβολισμοί. Το τοπίο θολώνει και είναι σαν δύο τοπία να ενώνονται σε ένα, όπως οι δύο αντανακλάσεις σε ένα τζάμι αυτοκινήτου που ενώνονται. Όλα θολώνουν. Υπήρξαν; Τα ονειρεύτηκε; Τον/Την/Το ρούφηξε η δυστοπία;
