INFORMATION
Anna Stereopoulou got inspired to compose the music of “Listen”, by the main themes of the movie (deafness, substantial communication, dance), as well as by the story and the sound design of other film works, such as, “It’s All Gone, Pete Tong” (Michael Dowse, 2004), “Aloys” (Tobias Nölle, 2016) and “PLANO” (AV Art-Work, Anna Stereopoulou, 2019). The goal of the music is the triggering of specific Energy Zones of the Body, and Brain Areas, based on the Practice of Silence, and Deep and Active Listening (Pythagoras, Plutarch, Pauline Oliveros), and on the Question: how much do we Listen to our inner Voice, and therefore the Other?
In parallel, the element of the Octopus (structure/movement, psychoanalysis, ancient cultures) – as appears in scenes of “Listen”, becomes the matrix on which the composer builds the music of the film, as a unifying medium between the new, original music and earlier compositions of her’s (remixed excerpts from PLANO, A∞, ARMOS). Thus, the sonic Whole that emerges functions as a mesh-reconciliation between Subjective-Objective, Vague-Specific, Closed-Open, and as a Dialogue between Sound (music, sound art, source music, synchronous sound), and Editing/Montage (rhythm, jump cuts).
The Piano (melodic Main Theme, and Valmira‘s repetitive patterns) the Synthesizers and Drones (aetherial or dark soundscapes), the Pulses and the Sine Waves, collide or complement each other, as pieces of a puzzle, and as ostraka of memories and emotions of the human relationships. At times obscure and at times imposing, they push, haunt, disturb, and break the rules, in an unconventional sound mix, with its delicate dynamics kept in the album version. No different from modern urban everyday life itself: An uncomfortable and numb sonic condition of Confusion and Panic, vibrating underneath and thirsting to burst out the innermost need for Expression – Understanding – Acceptance, in its full Spectrum.
