Brief Analysis &
Instrumentation / Equipment
«X» (v.3) was composed by Anna Stereopoulou in July 2018. The work is inspired by Olympias -mother of Alexander the Great- and her death (by stoning) in ancient Pydna (Greece), and it is based on the «Unity of the Opposites» (Heraclitus), as well as on ancient Greek and (later) traditional Epirotic music.
It is also a transcribed and developed form (Version 3) of the composer’s same-titled Sound Installation (composed in May 2018 / part of her ‘SYN’ project) and her research on the therapeutic properties of Sound on the Human Brain and the Human Psychology.
Heraclitus’s (above) theory, inspires the different Tones and Rhythms, produced and heard at the same time, representing the different realities co-existing and flowing simultaneously. The main goal of the composition is to embrace all of them and accept them as One, in the same sense one is challenged to do so, regarding the different parts of one’s self.
The Recorder Player is invited to perform seated on a (wooden / box-type) Stool, between the 2 Monitor Speakers (Left + Right channels) and to have the double ‘role’ of both a Performer (transmitter) and a Listener (receiver).
In other words, the electro-acoustic form of «X» (v.3) functions as a kind of ‘Enkoimesis‘ [Sleep + Dream Therapies practiced in the ancient Asclepions (ancient Greek world)] for both the Audience and the Performer, borrowing elements also from Indian Music (as discussed with Somali Panda), Science (Psycho-acoustics, Morse Code, Physics’ formulas), Linguistics, Philosophy, History and Social-cultural matters.
The Structure is based on the following key-word series, as shared by recorder player and conductor, Sylvia Hinz
ANGER – FEMINISM – POWER – OBSCURITY – PERSISTENCE

The album is part of the artist’s work-in-progress, S Y N, and has a cross-fade character; i.e. a transitional ‘music release’ step, to the album to follow as an artistic /musical ‘fruit’, of Anna Stereopoulou’s research and compositional progress of the project.
SYN = mathematical symbol + word-forming element meaning “together with, jointly; alike; at the same time,” also sometimes completive or intensive, from Greek syn (prep.) etymonline.com
